Raise Bore Drilling is extremely safe and economical drilling method to open large diameter holes to the surface or one underground level to another, typically used in mining operations, to excavate a circular hole between two levels of a mine without the use of explosives, or constructing ventilation shafts, ore passes, manways and penstocks. Raise bore drilling is quite versatile and has gained worldwide acceptance as the preferred rotary drilling method at mines. power generation plants and civil infrastructure projects.
The mostly used raise bore method is pre-drilled pilot-hole reaming, in which a raise bore machine is set up on the upper level of the two levels to be connected. A pilot hole is drilled by a sealed bearing pilot tricone bits to the lower level. Once the drill string has broken into the opening on the target level, the pilot bit would be removed and a reamer head with roller cutters,of required diameter of the excavation, is connected to the drill string and raised back up towards the raise bore drilling machine. The debris and cuttings from the reamer head during drilling fall on to a truck prepared on the floor of the lower level.
